Transition days can be hard on children

The time when your children move from your house to the other parent's home or vice versa can be rather difficult for them. They often feel very emotional having to leave one parent behind. Parents sometimes think that this becomes easier over time, and it does for some children. For others, they simply learn how to cope with the difficulties.

As their parent, you should do what you can to determine how to make these transitions easier for them. One of the most important things is that you and your ex must agree not to use these times to discuss contentious matters. Instead, try to keep the hand-off of the children calm and relaxed. This might help them feel better about the transition.

Another thing that you can do is let the children know the schedule ahead of time. This might mean just telling an older child, but you might have to make a countdown for younger children. They have time to figure out how to cope with the upcoming change.

You can also try to have a full set of what they will need at your home. Having to pack a bag is difficult because they might not feel stable. When they have to pack a bag, it becomes the focal point of their life. They have to pack up before they leave one house and unpack when they leave the next one. This makes it difficult for them to enjoy their time.

Make sure that you have the child custody agreement all set so that everyone knows what to expect. As your child matures, a modification might be in order. Your goal is to ensure that the current order meets the child's needs.
