A parenting team is powerful even after divorce

Working with your ex to determine what's going to happen for child custody isn't always easy, but parents can help their children considerably when they can make it happen. You and your ex both know your child and the situations that impact the custody arrangement. This enables you to make informed decisions about the kids.

The parenting plan that you have will govern every aspect of your child's life. It dictates when they spend time with each parent and who is going to make their decisions. The decisions that you and your ex make should be based on the child's needs right now. It is possible to modify the order in the future if those needs change.

One thing that you should remember is that you need to present a unified parenting front to the kids. They need to know that you and your ex are going to remain there for them even if you return to separate homes at night.

In some cases, it will help the kids if you and your ex speak to them together about the decisions being made for them. Explaining the child custody arrangement with everyone present also enables you to ensure that everyone is on the same page. It takes away the guesswork over what's going to happen.

If you can, try to keep the parenting plan flexible. Knowing that you and your ex can work together to ensure your children get what they need when they need it is empowering for you, and it helps to provide the kids with the stability and love they need to thrive.
