Leaving an abusive home is sometimes a complex undertaking

Domestic violence is a topic that is still often not discussed. The victims might feel ashamed of what's going on, but this can put them in a dangerous spot. When you are being abused at home, you might feel as though you are alone. You may not think that you have any options to get out of the situation. These thoughts can make it much more difficult for you to get out safely.

When you are in a home with a violent person, your life might be at risk. If it is possible, you should make a plan to leave. If you are in immediate danger, you should just leave as quickly as possible.

There are many different things that you can do when you are ready to get away from the abuser. First, get your identification and some money and/or your credit or debit cards. If they are joint accounts, be aware that your spouse might drain the accounts or close them without notice. Therefore, you should plan accordingly.

Second, you need a safe place to go. This might be the home of a family member or friend. Make sure it is someone who will stick up for you and who is willing to help you in the upcoming days and maybe longer. You may also consider a shelter if you don't feel you will be safe anywhere else.

Third, get the legal documents that you need to help keep you protected. You can file for a personal protective order and a divorce. While these won't provide you with complete protection, they do give you the basis of getting help from the police if your abusive ex comes near you.
