Aspiring model shares story, promotes domestic violence awareness

Domestic abuse is growing at an alarming rate. According to the website, Domesticviolencestatistic.org, this form of abuse is the number one cause of female injuries. The figures are higher than injuries from rape, muggings and car accidents combined. However, statistics do not clearly show the ordeal a domestic violence victim goes through while abused.

Perhaps, the case of an aspiring model named Gabriella can serve as a wakeup call for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, residents on the horrors of domestic violence. Gabriella shared her story with social media, along with graphic photos, to increase domestic violence awareness. Her pictures showed her with a bloody face with eyes shut and swollen. There were also scars on her chest and arms.

She recounted that besides being beaten by her boyfriend of eight months, she was also kicked out of a moving vehicle and dragged. Doctors related that she could have died. She stated that before the incident, her boyfriend repeatedly questioned her about flirting and cheating. She considered it nonsense and proclaimed how much she loved her boyfriend. Still, Gabriella questions how someone who supposedly loved her could act so heinously.

In spite of her ordeal, Gabriella considers herself blessed and fortunate to be alive. She cherishes the support given by family, friends and even well-meaning strangers. Gabriella is still on the road to recovery and can barely walk. But she hopes her story inspires women who are victims of domestic violence. Meanwhile, family and friends are raising funds to help her with her medical expenses.

While Gabriella's case has drawn a lot of media attention, it is by no means an isolated case. Domestic violence is a perennial concern across the country, including Philadelphia. Readers should understand that domestic violence is not limited to spousal abuse. Abuse between unmarried couples is also considered domestic assault. Victims who wish to stop the ordeal need to file a restraining order against the abuser.
