Restraining order: one way to prevent domestic violence

Misunderstandings are common in all relationships. For example, spouses may have an argument over finances, and as both sides tackle the dispute, the situation can escalate, often resulting in domestic violence. Physical, sexual and emotional abuses are some of the most common types of domestic violence recorded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In some instances, these acts of abuse go unreported as some spouses choose to endure the pain rather than leaving.

Domestic assaults do not happen in one particular city or county; rather, domestic violence tends to be an epidemic that affects numerous families throughout Pennsylvania. In a county near Philadelphia, 8,000 phone calls of domestic violence were documented in 2012. According to an expert who works with the county's domestic violence services, the outcome of domestic violence is difficult to predict as it involves love and hate and the fine line between them.

The expert also added that many spouses will leave their partners an average of seven times before they leave their partners for good. Constant absences from work, a socially isolated family and chronic marital problems are signs of abuse. Children are also affected by domestic violence, as they are often caught in the middle when their parents fight.

Any type of abuse within the household should be reported to local authorities. Concerned citizens should also do the same thing. Battered spouses should file a detailed report with the authorities in order to document how the assault occurred.

Philadelphia spouses need to understand that a restraining order can be a viable option in domestic violence situations. A restraining order may protect spouses from their abusive partners and prevent future assaults from occurring.
